Move-In Cleaning: What Should Be Cleaned First?
Moving into a new home is exciting — but whether it’s a newly built house or a rented flat, it’s rarely as clean as it looks. Previous tenants leave behind grease and grime, new homes are covered in construction dust and paint spots, and water tanks may not have been cleaned in months. The best time to clean is before your furniture and boxes arrive. Here’s what to clean first, and in what order.
Why Clean Before Moving In?
- Empty rooms are far quicker and easier to clean
- You can reach corners, floors and cupboards that will be blocked by furniture later
- You start fresh — without dust from someone else’s life or construction work
- It’s the right time to spot damage, leaks or pest problems and report them to the owner or builder
Before You Start
- ☐ Check water supply, electricity and lights are working
- ☐ Take photos of the home’s condition (useful for rental deposits)
- ☐ Open all windows for ventilation
- ☐ Keep ready: broom, mop, buckets, microfibre cloths, scrub brushes, a ladder, gloves, a degreaser, bathroom cleaner, a disinfectant and dustbin bags
The Right Order for Move-In Cleaning
1. Water Tank and Sump
Start here if you can. Overhead tanks and underground sumps collect sediment, algae and sometimes debris. Everything else you clean will use this water, and you’ll be drinking or cooking with it. Tank cleaning is best done by professionals, who drain, scrub and disinfect the tank safely.
2. Bathrooms and Toilets
Clean bathrooms early — you’ll need them usable from day one.
- ☐ Descale and disinfect the toilet, including under the rim and the base
- ☐ Scrub wall and floor tiles and grout
- ☐ Descale taps, shower heads and the health faucet
- ☐ Clean the basin, mirror, shelves and exhaust fan
- ☐ Check for leaks and blocked drains
3. Kitchen
- ☐ Clean inside every cabinet and drawer — previous occupants often leave crumbs and grease
- ☐ Degrease wall tiles, especially behind the stove
- ☐ Clean the chimney and exhaust fan if already fitted
- ☐ Scrub the sink, descale the tap and flush the drain with hot water
- ☐ Wipe countertops with a product suitable for granite or other stone

4. Ceilings, Fans and High Areas (Whole House)
Always work top to bottom so falling dust doesn’t settle on clean surfaces.
- ☐ Remove cobwebs from ceilings and corners
- ☐ Clean ceiling fans and light fittings
- ☐ Wipe tops of doors, cupboards and window frames
5. Wardrobes and Storage
- ☐ Vacuum and wipe inside wardrobes, lofts and shelves
- ☐ Check for termites, cockroaches and damp
- ☐ Let them dry and air before filling
6. Windows, Grills and Doors
- ☐ Wash window grills, frames and sliding tracks
- ☐ Clean glass inside and outside
- ☐ Wipe doors, handles and frames
- ☐ Clean switchboards (power off, barely damp cloth)
7. Walls
- ☐ Spot-clean marks with a gentle cleaner — test first on painted walls
- ☐ In new homes, remove paint drops and plaster splashes from switches and fittings
8. Floors — Last
- ☐ Sweep and vacuum every room
- ☐ Scrub floors and grout; remove cement, paint and putty spots
- ☐ Mop with a cleaner suited to your floor type
- ☐ Clean balconies, utility areas and staircases

Extra Steps for Newly Built Homes
New construction leaves fine cement dust, paint drops, grout haze and sticker residue everywhere. This “post-construction” cleaning is heavier than a normal clean and often needs professional products and machines to remove cement haze without scratching tiles or damaging fittings.
Extra Steps for Rented Homes
- Disinfect high-touch areas: door handles, switches, taps and cupboard handles
- Deep clean the kitchen and bathrooms thoroughly — they hold the most grime
- Consider pest control before moving in
- Note any damage in writing to the owner
