How to Clean a Sofa at Home: Step-by-Step Guide
A sofa collects dust, sweat, food crumbs and the occasional tea spill every single day. A quick vacuum helps, but every few months it needs a proper clean. The good news: with a little care, you can clean most sofas at home. This step-by-step guide shows you how — and how to avoid the common mistakes that leave water rings, shrinkage or faded patches.
Step 1: Check the Fabric Care Label
Look for a tag under the cushions or the sofa base. It usually shows a code:
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaners are safe |
| S | Solvent-based cleaners only — no water |
| WS | Either water or solvent cleaners |
| X | Vacuum only — no liquid cleaning; call a professional |
If there’s no label, test any cleaner on a hidden area (like the back or underside) first and let it dry before continuing.
What You’ll Need
- Vacuum cleaner with an upholstery brush and crevice tool
- Mild dish soap or upholstery shampoo
- Baking soda
- White vinegar (optional)
- Soft-bristle brush
- Several clean white microfibre cloths (coloured cloths can transfer dye)
- Spray bottle and a bucket of lukewarm water
Step 2: Vacuum Thoroughly
- Remove all cushions.
- Vacuum the frame, seat base, arms and back with the brush attachment.
- Use the crevice tool along seams, folds and corners — this is where crumbs and dust collect.
- Vacuum both sides of each cushion.
Step 3: Deodorise With Baking Soda
Sprinkle a light, even layer of baking soda over the sofa and cushions. Leave it for 20–30 minutes (longer for strong odours), then vacuum it off completely.
Step 4: Treat Stains First
Always blot — never rub, which spreads the stain and damages fibres. Work from the outside of the stain inwards.
| Stain | What to do (W or WS fabrics) |
|---|---|
| Tea and coffee | Blot with a cloth dampened in a mix of water, a little dish soap and a splash of vinegar |
| Oil and food grease | Sprinkle baking soda or cornflour to absorb, leave 15 minutes, brush off, then blot with soapy water |
| Ink | Dab with a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth (test first) |
| Sweat and body oil on armrests | Blot with dish soap solution, then rinse-blot with plain water |
| Turmeric and curry | Blot with soapy water; these often need professional treatment to remove fully |
Step 5: Clean the Whole Sofa
- Mix a teaspoon of mild dish soap in a bucket of lukewarm water.
- Dip a microfibre cloth, wring it well — it should be damp, not wet.
- Wipe the fabric in sections, working from top to bottom.
- Use a soft brush on textured fabrics to lift dirt.
- Go over each section again with a cloth dampened in plain water to remove soap residue.
Tip: Clean the whole panel or cushion, not just the stain, to avoid visible “clean patches” and water rings.
Step 6: Dry It Properly
- Blot excess moisture with a dry towel
- Open windows and run the fan
- Stand cushions on their edges so air reaches both sides
- Avoid strong direct sunlight for long periods, which can fade fabric
- Don’t sit on the sofa until it’s completely dry — usually 6–12 hours
During Karaikudi’s humid monsoon months, drying takes longer. A sofa that stays damp can develop a musty smell or mould, so clean on a dry, breezy day if you can.
Leather and Rexine Sofas
- Wipe with a damp cloth and a few drops of mild soap
- Dry immediately with a soft cloth
- Condition genuine leather every few months
- Avoid vinegar, alcohol and harsh cleaners
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Soaking the fabric — water seeps into the foam and causes rings, odour and mould
- Using too much soap, which leaves a sticky residue that attracts dirt
- Scrubbing hard, which causes pilling and fading
- Using bleach or strong detergents
- Machine-washing cushion covers without checking they’re removable and washable
How Often to Clean Your Sofa
- Weekly: vacuum
- Immediately: blot spills
- Every 2–3 months: baking soda refresh and wipe-down
- Every 6–12 months: professional shampooing or extraction cleaning
When Home Cleaning Isn’t Enough
Home methods clean the surface. Dirt, sweat and dust mites that have sunk into the foam need hot-water extraction or shampooing machines. See how professional sofa cleaning removes dust and stains, or read about sofa cleaning in Karaikudi.
