Complete Home Deep Cleaning Guide
Planning to deep clean your whole home before a festival or a family function? A proper deep clean takes planning. Done in the wrong order, you’ll end up cleaning the same floor three times. This guide walks you through a complete home deep clean, room by room, with the supplies you need and the right sequence to follow.
Before You Start: The Golden Rules
- Top to bottom. Clean fans, lights and high shelves first. Dust falls down, so floors always come last.
- Dry before wet. Dust and vacuum before you wipe or mop, otherwise dust turns to mud.
- One room at a time. Finish a room completely before moving on, so you can see progress.
- Test first. Try any new product on a hidden spot before using it on a whole surface.
- Never mix chemicals. Especially never mix bleach with acids (like descalers) or ammonia — it releases harmful gas.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Microfibre cloths (several), a sponge and a soft scrub brush
- An old toothbrush or grout brush
- A sturdy ladder or step stool
- Vacuum cleaner with brush and crevice attachments (if available)
- Bucket, mop and a squeegee
- Mild dish soap and a general-purpose cleaner
- Baking soda and white vinegar
- A descaler suitable for your bathroom fittings
- A degreaser for the kitchen
- Rubber gloves and a mask for dusty jobs
Step 1: Declutter First
Deep cleaning is far easier when surfaces are clear. Spend the first hour removing things you don’t need, putting items back where they belong and clearing counters, shelves and bathroom ledges. Keep a box for donations and a bag for rubbish.
Step 2: Ceilings, Fans and Lights
- Switch off fans and lights at the switchboard.
- Use an old pillowcase over each fan blade and pull it back — the dust stays inside the cover.
- Wipe blades with a damp cloth, then dry.
- Dust tube lights and light covers; wipe switchboards with a barely damp cloth.
- Remove cobwebs from ceiling corners.
Step 3: Walls, Doors and Windows
- Wipe doors, door frames and handles.
- Spot-clean marks on painted walls gently — test first so the paint doesn’t lift.
- Vacuum window tracks, then scrub them with a brush and soapy water.
- Wash window grills with a damp cloth; they collect a lot of dust in Karaikudi’s dry months.
- Clean glass last with a squeegee or a microfibre cloth for a streak-free finish.
Step 4: Living Room and Bedrooms
- Dust the tops of wardrobes, shelves and the TV unit.
- Move light furniture and clean underneath and behind it.
- Vacuum sofas, including under the cushions. For stains and odour, see our sofa cleaning guide.
- Vacuum mattresses and flip or rotate them.
- Wash curtains, cushion covers and bedsheets.
- Clean carpets and rugs — our carpet cleaning guide explains how.
Step 5: Kitchen
The kitchen usually takes the longest because of grease. Work in this order:
- Empty and wipe cupboards and shelves, discarding expired items.
- Degrease the exhaust fan and the chimney exterior (and filters, if removable).
- Scrub the tiles behind and around the stove.
- Clean the stove, burners and knobs.
- Clean inside the fridge and microwave.
- Scrub the sink, tap and drain.
- Wipe cabinet fronts and handles.

Step 6: Bathrooms
- Remove all toiletries, buckets and mugs.
- Apply descaler to taps, shower heads and scale-marked tiles. Leave for the time stated on the product.
- Scrub wall tiles, then grout lines with a small brush.
- Clean the toilet thoroughly, including under the rim and around the base.
- Clean the wash basin, mirror and glass partitions.
- Scrub the floor and clean the drain cover.
- Rinse everything and leave the door and window open to dry.
Heavy hard-water scale is one of the hardest things to remove yourself. If it won’t budge, see what professional bathroom deep cleaning includes.
Step 7: Balconies and Utility Areas
- Sweep and scrub the floor.
- Wipe railings and clean the washing area and outlet.
- Clean the washing machine drum and detergent drawer.
Step 8: Floors — Last of All
Sweep or vacuum every room, including corners and under furniture, then mop. Use a cleaner suitable for your floor type — mosaic, marble and Athangudi tiles can be damaged by acidic or harsh products. If your floor has lost its shine, tile polishing can restore it.
How Long Will It Take?
For one or two people, a full home deep clean often takes two to three days, depending on the size of the house and how much buildup there is. Splitting it room by room over a week can make it more manageable.
When to Call a Professional
- Hard-water scale or dark grout that won’t come off
- Sofas and carpets that still smell after cleaning
- Very high ceilings, fans or glass that aren’t safe to reach
- After renovation, when fine dust is everywhere
- When you simply don’t have two or three days to spare
