Festival Home Cleaning Checklist
Pongal, Deepavali, Karthigai Deepam, Navaratri — festivals in Karaikudi mean guests, kolams, pooja preparations and lots of cooking. Cleaning the whole house beforehand is a tradition in most homes, but it’s easy to run out of time and end up rushing the night before. This festival home cleaning checklist spreads the work over two weeks so the house is ready without the last-minute stress.
Two Weeks Before: Plan and Declutter
- ☐ Walk through every room and note what needs deep cleaning
- ☐ Decide what you’ll do yourself and what to book professionals for (sofa shampooing, bathroom descaling, floor scrubbing) — cleaning companies get busy just before big festivals
- ☐ Declutter: old newspapers, broken items, clothes you no longer wear, expired medicines and food
- ☐ Arrange donations or scrap pickup
- ☐ Stock up on supplies: brooms, mops, microfibre cloths, dish soap, baking soda, vinegar, degreaser, bathroom cleaner, gloves and bin bags
10–7 Days Before: High Areas and Heavy Jobs
- ☐ Remove cobwebs from ceilings, corners and behind cupboards
- ☐ Clean ceiling fans and light fittings (power off)
- ☐ Wash curtains and cushion covers
- ☐ Clean window grills, frames and glass
- ☐ Clean lofts and the tops of wardrobes
- ☐ Clean the water tank if it’s due
7–5 Days Before: Kitchen
The kitchen works hardest during festivals, so give it a thorough clean before the cooking starts.
- ☐ Empty and wipe cabinets; throw out expired spices and snacks
- ☐ Degrease wall tiles, especially behind the stove
- ☐ Clean chimney filters and the exhaust fan
- ☐ Clean the stove, burners and knobs
- ☐ Clean the fridge and make space for festival food
- ☐ Wash brass and steel vessels you’ll use for cooking and serving

5–4 Days Before: Bathrooms
- ☐ Descale taps, shower heads and the health faucet
- ☐ Scrub wall and floor tiles and grout
- ☐ Clean and disinfect the toilet, including under the rim and base
- ☐ Clean the mirror, shelves and exhaust fan
- ☐ Keep fresh towels and soap ready for guests
4–3 Days Before: Living Room and Bedrooms
- ☐ Vacuum or shampoo the sofa and cushions
- ☐ Clean carpets and rugs
- ☐ Dust shelves, showcases, photo frames and TV units
- ☐ Clean under beds and sofas
- ☐ Change bedsheets and air out pillows and mattresses in the sun
- ☐ Wipe doors, handles and switchboards
3–2 Days Before: Pooja Room
- ☐ Carefully remove idols, photos and lamps
- ☐ Clean shelves and the floor
- ☐ Polish brass and silver items (tamarind or lemon with salt works well for brass; use silver polish for silver)
- ☐ Clean oil stains from lamps and the floor around them
- ☐ Replace old flowers, cloth and decorations
2–1 Days Before: Floors and Entrance
- ☐ Sweep and scrub all floors, working from the farthest room towards the entrance
- ☐ Remove stains and grout grime
- ☐ Clean the main door, threshold and doorframe
- ☐ Wash the front yard or entrance area for kolam
- ☐ Clean the balcony, staircase and car parking area
- ☐ Put out clean doormats
Festival Day: Quick Refresh
- ☐ Quick sweep and mop of main areas
- ☐ Wipe the dining table and serving area
- ☐ Check the guest bathroom
- ☐ Empty bins
After the Festival
- ☐ Clean oil and wax from lamps and floors
- ☐ Clean up after fireworks — ash and paper at the entrance and terrace
- ☐ Remove sweets and snacks residue from sofas and carpets
- ☐ Deep clean the kitchen after heavy frying
Short on Time?
If you can only do a few things, prioritise: kitchen, guest bathroom, living room, floors and the entrance. For a room-by-room method, see our complete home deep cleaning guide.
